PE at Foster's

P.E. at Foster's Primary School

At Foster’s Primary School, we believe that Physical Education is a vital part of every child’s development. Our PE curriculum is designed to inspire a love of movement, encourage healthy lifestyles and develop confidence, teamwork and resilience. From the Early Years through to Key Stage 2, children experience a broad and balanced programme that allows them to explore, practise and refine a wide range of physical skills while learning the importance of play, perseverance and enjoyment in physical activity.

Early Years Foundation Stage

In the EYFS, physical development underpins lots of the children’s learning. Independence is encouraged by helping children to learn how to change into their PE kits, building self-care and responsibility.

Through continuous provision, children explore both fine and gross motor skills, developing their coordination, strength and control. PE lessons in the EYFS focus on play-based activities such as running, jumping, walking, dancing, gymnastics, ball skills and athletics. This foundation sets the stage for children to grow in confidence and develop skills that they can apply as they progress through the school.

Key Stage 1

In Key Stage 1, children begin to build on the foundations set in the EYFS by developing the core skills needed for games and more structured physical activities. Lessons include dance, gymnastics, ball skills, racket skills, games for understanding, athletics, locomotion and activities that promote health and wellbeing.

Children are not only physically active, but are also learning to work with others, solve problems and begin to understand the importance of teamwork and fair competition.

Key Stage 2

In Key Stage 2, children start to apply and refine the skills they have developed in earlier years, using them in a wide range of sports and competitive situations. Lessons include orienteering, football, tennis, netball, dance, gymnastics, dodgeball, basketball, handball, rounders, athletics, cricket and hockey.

In upper Key Stage 2, children also have the opportunity to develop swimming skills, building confidence and safety in the water. As pupils grown, they are encouraged to take on greater challenges, show resilience and develop sporting values such as respect, teamwork and determination.

Clubs and Teams

Beyond the PE curriculum, Foster’s Primary School offers a wide variety of extracurricular clubs and sporting opportunities. Children have the opportunity to join clubs outside of school hours such as football, dance, gymnastics, dodgeball and more, allowing them to further develop their skills and interests.

We are proud to run both boys’ and girls’ football teams, as well as a school netball team, all of which compete in local competitions. These opportunities give children the chance to represent the school, work together as a team and experience the excitement and pride of competitive sport.

PE Beyond the Classroom

At Foster’s Primary School, we provide extra opportunities to get active and celebrate healthy living throughout the year.

We hold special events such as Healthy Living Week, where children explore the importance of keeping their bodies and minds healthy through a mix of fun activities, challenges and workshops. Out Sports Day is always a highlight and brings our school community together to cheer on the children.

We also welcome a range of visitors and workshops into school to inspire and motivate our pupils. These have included athlete visits, fitness workshops and exciting sessions with local clubs. These experiences give children the chance to learn from experts, try out different sports and see the positive impact physical activity can have on their lives.
